2nd Cromer Guides have marked the Centenary with a special illuminated sign on the Esplanade at Cromer along Runton Road. We were given a legacy and decided that a permanent reminder of the Centenary celebrations would be appropriate. It has taken since last September to organise but now that it has been installed we are so pleased. The installation came just before the last ever meeting of our Unit. Chris Brickles
NORJAM 2010, Norfolk’s international Scout and Guide jamboree, is almost upon us. Almost 5000 Scouts and Guides from across the UK and abroad will shortly arrive and transform the Norfolk Showground into a global village for a week of adventure, fun, international friendship and new experiences.
I’m sure many of you will be at NORJAM, but if not and you’d like to know what we’re getting up to, from Saturday you can check out our daily newspaper on the NORJAM website: www.norjam2010.org.uk or listen to our live jamboree radio station, Jam FM. The radio station will be broadcasting live from early morning on Saturday 31st July – Saturday 7th August. For those in the Norwich area, the frequency is 87.7fm, and it will also be streamed live on the internet: http://www.jamfm.org.uk/listen.php
Once again 1st Martham Brownies took part in the annual carnival in Martham on July 5th and 6th. On Saturday they set up their stall on the village green to raise funds for the unit. Games included tombola, Teddy Name Tag, Lucky Dip and the every popular Pick a Peg. The Brownies did a swift trade and by the end of the afternoon all tombola prizes had been won and a fantastic £205 had been raised. On Sunday girls who will be in the newly formed 2nd Martham Guides unit manned the stall. They raised £90, which will be very useful in buying some equipment for the new unit.
On Sunday Rainbows, Brownies and Guides from Martham took part in the carnival procession. The theme of their float was celebrating 100 years of girl guiding. The girls thoroughly enjoyed waving their flags and singing as they passed through the village. £101 was collected during the procession, which will be shared amongst the units.
On the weekend of the 10th and 11th July 2010, Rainbows, Brownies and Guides from Heacham and Hunstanton joined together for a District Sleepover to celebrate Girlguiding's Centenary. We worked through the Decades to earn our Decades badge. We started in 1910 by doing Semaphore, then learnt the Charleston in 1920, celebrated the 1930s with a Scavenge Hunt, in the 1940s we learnt about folding and carrying a flag, the 1950s saw us making crowns and going Hula Hooping, the 1960s saw us making Tardis’s and Daleks culminating in a 5 aside football match, which the Tardis’s won by penalties.
On 22nd May 63 Brownies from Fleggs District took part in The Big Brownie Takeover as part of their celebrations for Girlguiding's 100th birthday. Half the day was spent at the Hippodrome circus where they tried their hand at circus skills such as tight rope walking, plate spinning and more. They then had a look backstage and at the museum. After lunch which included cake for all time was spent exploring The Time and Tide museum. Here the girls had the chance to see Yarmouth as it once was and look round the circus display here. They also took part in a circus themed mask making workshop. A fun day was had by all.
