Welcome to a sunny summary of what awaits you on a visit to Lowestoft division, the most easterly division in the UK.
Everyone who knows Lowestoft knows our town sits in Suffolk – but it became part of Girlguiding Norfolk at the express wish of Lady Bridget Somerleyton, as Lord Somerleyton was part of the Norfolk Regiment, later the Royal Norfolk Regiment. Our Britannia county badge was adopted by Guides in 1923, when the regiment gave permission for us to use, with “Norfolk” written underneath. It remains the only county badge with a military background.
Our districts include Lowestoft, UK’s most easterly point and Oulton Broad, “where broadland meets the sea”. Our division is smaller than it once was but still aims to ensure that our younger members have every opportunity available. Our thriving Trefoil Guild shows that anyone over 18 can join together to share the same ethos.
Starting at 4 years old, our Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers are aware that we help girls know that they can do anything. We give girls a space to belong and have fun. We show them leadership skills and listen to them – the latest research has resulted in 72 new interest badges and the many took part in the consultation over the uniform redesign due in 2026. Every year we hold a Girls Attitude Survey, to understand the problems they face in today’s world – and what we can do to help them.
Like many voluntary organisations we are always keen to encourage more volunteers. Volunteering with us isn’t just about campfires and helping girls to get their next badge – although those are special moments. It’s about empowering girls and giving them new experiences. It’s helping girls realise their own potential, sharing and developing your skills, all while having the time of your life.
Last September, Girlguiding Anglia arranged a ‘takeover day’ at Pleasurewood Hills – which saw over 2,000 members enjoy a late summer day of fun and friendship. We would warmly welcome new volunteers to join us in any of the leadership roles, and our younger members need your support to give them these opportunities.
